Information You're Finding!

No Oura Ring (not even Oura Ring Gen 3) has the Fall Detection System. They have the hardware in place for the feature but Oura hasn't worked on software side yet.

Little About Fall Detection System

To those of you who are aware of the Fall Detection system, you can skip this part and head straight to the next section. As for those who want to broaden their knowledge here is what you should know about Fall or Crash Detection: In smart devices (it could be smartwatch or smart ring) using the special motion sensors a fall is detected when the user lose their weight and end up on the floor.

Usually this is implemented by using the accelerometer which is tasked to keep real time data of the device’s motion and movement. If there is an abrupt change i.e. the user fell or lost footing the device is engineered to send the alert to emergency contacts or 911 (depends on what kind of device you are using) to fetch the help.

In practice it is very simple and easy to implement feature, sadly, even in 2023 you’d be surprised to know that their are many famous health trackers *coughs* Fitbit *coughs* which do not have this ability. So, the question: Does Oura Rings Have Fall Detection?

Oura Rings Are Able To Alert Crash But Do They?

Unfortunately, no, just like the Fitbit it seems Oura has also not thought it this far. They have the capacity to do so. All Oura Rings can track steps and distance which are done using an accelerometer. Yet it seems like they have not put it as priority for now.

Of course, things can change in the future, for now if you are an Oura Ring user and you happen to find yourself in a crash situation. You smart ring will not be able to help you out to get out of it. So, if you are someone who is at risk then perhaps an alternative approach should be considered?

Potential Reasons Why Oura Doesn’t Have The Aura?

There can be many reasons which we can attribute to the lack of Fall Detection System. For instance the easiest guess is that Oura Ring is not – particularly – worn by people who are at risk. If you look at the demographic which Oura itself targets it is 20s to 40s so anyone who is avid consumer of Oura product is not really in need of Fall Detection which perhaps could be reason why the company hasn’t worked on it.

Another reason which could be the case is Oura Rings do not have the liberty of size that other fitness trackers have in their hold. They are small and pretty lightweight. Although, it is true that this issue is more of software side we don’t know the inner working of the smart ring. Oura has kept the assembly of its ring a secret and until we can get hold of more information any guess is good as you would want it to be.

This might seem like a stretch but if you think about it it would make sense. Oura Rings do not have the screen like an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch which means that even if someday Oura will introduce the Fall Detection system there is no way through which you can confirm the distress call. Any time even when you would be okay a skewed result can send the distress alert to your contacts.

Try These Alternative For Fall Detection System

As we mentioned above if not having the Fall Detection system in your smart device is a deal breaker for you then you should look into alternatives. Although, keep in mind that alternative can cost you more or less depending on what you choose. Another point to note here is that you shouldn’t base your purchase on just one thing or a function. Keep your options open and research the market before making an informed choice.

Garmin Venu 2

Garmin Venu 2

While the Garmin Venu 2 is not the sole Garmin watch with Fall Detection, it is arguably their flagship model. To avoid any confusion, Garmin has chosen to refer to this feature as “Incident Detection” rather than “Fall Detection.” So, if you happen to be a Venu 2 user and are wondering about the presence of Fall Detection, exercise caution and approach this information with a touch of common sense.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

If there was awards like Oscar for smartwatches where the best looking was category there is no doubt Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 would’ve win it. Not only is it the one of the most powerful smartwatch you will come across, with the added benefit of Fall Detection you will have a smartwatch which will protect you at all times.
