Google Fi on Apple Watches? No Hope For Now!

Google Fi on Apple Watches

As an Apple Watch user, finding the right mobile plan can be a challenge. There are far too many eggs to make an informed choice. Some cost too much. Some provide too little. All of them have strings attached to them.

So when in 2015 Google announced its MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) there did come hope with it. Yes, given Google long history of preferential behavior many knew it wouldn't arrive for the iOS devices any time soon. It has been 8 years now, and you're not the only one to wonder: Is Google Fi on Apple Watches?

Information You're Finding!

There is no dedicated Google Fi plan for Apple Watch. However, if you have one for iPhone you can use it for your Apple Watch as well. Quality might suffer but you'd have to keep your phone and smartwatch close to each other.

What Even Is Google Fi

If we were to explain Google Fi in one sentence we’d say Google Fi is MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operator. But let’s be honest that really doesn’t make things any clear for non-techy people out there. It might not even be clear to many tech lovers here. So to understand what is really going on here think of MNVO this way:

An MVNO, or Mobile Virtual Network Operator, is like a store that sells you things you need for your phone, like talking, texting, and using the internet. But instead of having their own big store and things, they use other big stores (called networks) to sell what you need. So, you still get everything you need for your phone, but from a smaller store that’s easier to use and often costs less.

Now that we are hopefully acquainted with the concept of MVNO let’s move toward the business side of things…

“Can I Use Apple Watch With Google Fi?”

No.

But Yes.

But No.

While it might seem I might be tripping up there I have my reasons for each ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’

First ‘No‘: Google Fi doesn’t have a dedicated Apple Watch plan.

First ‘But Yes‘: However, you can use it if you have Google Fi on your iPhone.

Second ‘No‘: If your iPhone wouldn’t close there are pretty good chances of a drop in data or even a total blackout. This is the same issue by the way which we saw in using Straight Talk for Apple Watches. Both works on iPhones but have no support for Apple Watches.

Speaking of limitations there are far too many, some of them even affect iPhone pairing with Google Fi.

Hoping For Google Fi? Too Bleak?

Recently Google has added support for Pixel Watches and Samsung Galaxy Watch series, and many Apple Watch users are now holding their breath in hope of being the next lucky pick. Which is fine.

Google Fi Doesn't Support Apple Watches

There is no harm in hoping for a hopeful end. However, given Google’s lackluster approach towards the project and almost non-existent Customer Support for Google Fi it seems like throwing the dart in the air.

Would it stick to the landing? Only time will tell.

Alternatives To Google Fi For Apple Watches

Although Google Fi wide coverage and policy that only charges for data that is used by users would never stop being a lucrative option, there are alternatives to it. The most prominent of which is Visible owned by Verizon that not only is low-cost but has a dedicated Apple Watch plan to satisfy all your networking needs.

You can begin with just $30/month and it will cover both your iPhone and the smartwatch. Data Attenuation can become an issue at times, but for what it is worth, there is no harm in giving it a shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Google Fi works with certain smartwatches that support cellular connectivity. The smartwatches must be running on Google’s Wear OS platform, and they must be compatible with Google Fi’s network.

It depends on your individual needs and preferences. Google Fi offers a flexible, pay-as-you-go mobile plan that can save you money if you don’t use a lot of data.

Some of the disadvantages of Google Fi include limited device compatibility, limited international roaming options (compared to traditional carriers), and limited customer service options.

The benefits of an eSIM over a physical SIM card depend on the specific use case. eSIMs are more convenient and flexible, as they can be programmed with multiple mobile profiles, allowing you to switch carriers or plans without having to swap out physical SIM cards.
