Your Apple Watch Is Dead & Lost!

For many of us our Apple Watch is a perfect companion, it helps us to achieve our fitness goals, it connects us to people from afar, and when there is a need it even entertains us. So losing one can be pretty devastating, not to mention they are generally expansive so replacing them is not an everyday activity.

But it can happen.

You can lose your Apple Watch at any place you go through in a day. It is a watch, after all, you would take it off many times. No one expects you to have it on yourself 24/7 unless it is a medical requirement. Which can be given Apple Watch has Fall Detection system.

Either way, there are ways to find a way back to it. But before we proceed, it is vital to understand that your chances of finding your Apple Watch greatly depend on its battery and connectivity status. Take one out and we have a problem.

Requirements For Finding Apple Watch!

The one and only way through which you can find your Apple Watch be it dead or not is by using the ‘Find My’ application or accessing it from Website. However, what is important to know is that to even do that you should’ve enabled the ‘Find My’ feature in your Apple Watch beforehand.

So if you are reading this for precaution then please follow this route right now:

  • Navigate to the Settings app
  • On the top, click your name
  • On the next page, tap the Find My button
  • You can find your iPhone by clicking on the Find My iPhone button
  • Offline Finding or Find My Network should be enabled
  • Make sure Send Last Location is turned on

If you have lost the Apple Watch and you didn’t do it before then we’d suggest that you call the authorities now. Because apart from this application there is no other way to find an Apple Watch or any Apple product. Unless you had it air tagged which I’m gonna assume you didn’t.

But if you had done your homework beforehand then it’s time to track your dead Apple Watch!

Case Number #1: Apple Watch Was Charged

Since results depend on the battery status of the watch and active connection it is better to understand the procedures imaging two different cases. In this one you lost your Apple Watch on your way back from the gym however since you had it on a charge while working out you have the choice to opt for the following ways to find a way back to your smartwatch.

Play The Sound On Apple Watch

This method is better suited to finding Apple Watch if it was lost in your home or at least not very far from where you are. What you would need to do is this:

  • Open ‘Find My‘ application on your iPhone or iPad
  • From there toggle to ‘Devices‘
  • Click on your lost Apple Watch.
  • In the subsection you will see the button saying “Play the Sound” so click on it.

If your smartwatch would be within 33 feet of space it will produce a unique sound that can be easily heard.

Use Live Location To Track Lost Apple Watch

Since in this case, your Apple Watch hasn’t dried up or lost connection, all you would need to do is this:

  • Go to the ‘Find My‘ application
  • Navigate to ‘Devices
  • Click on your Apple Watch to see its live location.

However, keep in mind you would only be able to see the location of your Apple Watch if it would be connected to Wi-Fi and have GPS. And I am telling you this because Apple Watch Series 1 didn’t have GPS capacity so if you have lost it, then there might be no way back. As it will only show the location of the paired device – in your case your phone.

Live Location Of Apple Watch

One more thing, you can do this on both your phone and computer. While on iPhone you’d need to have the ‘Find My’ application installed. For a computer, you would just need to login into your iCloud account from the website and then toggle to the “Find My” section to begin the search.

Activate Lost Mode On Apple Watch

While I hope it doesn’t come to this, if the above two methods don’t bring you any fruitful results, then you should consider activating the lost mode. To those of you who are wondering what is lost mode, let me explain: In Lost Mode your Apple Watch is locked so even if someone will find it they can’t use it for themselves.

Lost Mode On Apple Watch

The screen of the watch will be showing your contact details and a message to return it to you. You can mark your watch lost through any of the Apple devices, and here is how to do it:

  • Open Find My and tap your Apple Watch.
  • Tap Activate in the Mark As Lost section.
  • Tap Continue.
  • Enter a phone number where you can be reached, then tap Next.
  • Enter a message that you want to show on the watch screen.
  • Tap Activate.

Once your watch will be found by a person, you will get a notification, and if they are willing you can arrange a meet up to collect your smartwatch from them.

Case Number #2: Apple Watch Wasn’t Charged

In this case, we would assume your Apple Watch lost the charge at some point and thus have no active connection to any device. While I wouldn’t wish this even on my worst enemy, it has happened to many people. That’s why it is important to know our options.

Check Last Location Of Apple Watch

If you would have enabled the option to show the last known location in your ‘Find My’ application then you could get the last known location of your watch. Apple has added this functionality in pretty much all of its devices to send locations under critical circumstances.

All you’d need to do is once again take the help of the ‘Find My’ app and go to the paired devices and from there click on your smartwatch. However, there is a catch, and it is that your watch’s last known location will be shown only for a short period of time. So let’s say you lost the watch 8 hours ago and you are trying to check its location now. To put it mildly, it is not going to work out. After a certain time span, your Apple Watch location will be lost.

Inform Local Authorities

In the happenstance where after trying everything you are empty-handed, it is time to contact the police. Apple Watches are valuable assets and the loss of them warrants the call to authorities. Even Apple encourages its users to make that call and get ahead of the situation. In which case you should give your device serial number to the police.

Tips To Prevent Losing Apple Watch

While it is not in our hands to control we can always make sure to futureproof ourselves. In doing so should also automatically better our chances of finding our Apple Watch in the future. In case we lose it again.

  • Use a case or band with a built-in tracker. It can ensure an extra layer of protection and help in real-time if and when you’d lose your watch.
  • Set up the Find My’ application. As seen above it is almost impossible to have any chance without the ‘Find My’ application. Hence stay ahead of the curve and have it enabled on all your Apple devices.
  • Use a strong passcode. The addition of two-factor authentication can improve the security of the device tenfold.
  • Be careful where you put your Apple Watch. Most of the time we lose our watches because of taking them off. So to ensure they stay in sight is pretty vital.
  • Keep your Apple Watch software up to date. This will help to ensure that your watch has the latest security features.

“What If I Don’t Have My iPhone To Find My Apple Watch?”

If you lost your Apple Watch somewhere or at the time when you didn’t have your iPhone with you. There is still a way you could track your Apple Watch. To do it you would have to ask from a friend for their iPhone and then follow these steps carefully:

  • Open the Find My app on their phone.
  • Select Me from the menu
  • Choose the Help a Friend option
  • To use a different Apple ID, select Use a different Apple ID
  • You’ll need to log in with the same Apple ID that you used to set up Find My app in your iPhone.

Once you will do this you can access all your Apple devices location from your friend’s phone. Including your lost Apple Watch’s location if you would’ve enabled it.
