Your Fitbit Versa Screen Is Black And Not Working?

Ever since its release the Fitbit Versa series by Fitbit has been a commercial success. With millions of units sold in more than 150+ territories, we are not here to judge its ability as a fitness tracker. We know it’s amazing. There is a lot to cherish about it. However, at the moment our concerns are different, as is the burning question of how to solve the Fitbit’s Versa black screen.

Now, before we begin it is important to note that these solutions apply to all Fitbit Versa trackers so it doesn’t matter if you have titular Versa, Versa 2, Versa 3, or the brand new Fitbit Versa 4. You can apply the mentioned solutions on all of them!

Are You Sure It Is a Screen Issue?

While it didn’t happen with my Fitbit device I have experienced a situation where my Fossil Gen 5 had a perfectly fine Display. But because I was suggested it is a faulty screen that has rendered the no response sight, I got it changed from a third-party vendor.

Long story short I wasted my $100 and it was a software bug that had it wrapped in darkness.

So it would be advisable for you to make sure it is indeed the Screen that is acting up and not the watch. Now you might be wondering how can I do that when I can’t see anything. Well, the easiest way is by trying to call or text yourself, since your Versa would (hopefully) be synced to your phone it would vibrate if it is on and okay.

Try To Restart Your Fitbit Versa

Okay, let’s start with the most obvious solution you are likely to hear for anything.

Have you tried turning it on and off again?!?

Everyone

As absurd as it might sound to hear it 45% time restarting a device – any type of device – can lead to a quick fix. So I don’t see a reason why you shouldn’t try your luck here. After all, restarting a Fitbit Versa tracker isn’t necessarily hard and there are no downsides to it. If it won’t work you would know in a minute.

Restart The Fitbit

All you have to do is to plug it in and keep holding the buttons until you see the Fitbit logo appears. Usually, it takes 5-8 seconds, but depending on the condition, it might vary. Be ready to repeat the process, many users have found success on the fifth-sixth try. So don’t give up early.

Charge Your Fitbit Properly

Alright, assuming you tried to restart it and it didn’t work, you can always get your charging cable and put the Fitbit to charge up. Many times what happens is that the battery has dried unreliably quicker than its usual time and you haven’t noticed it.

Charge It

Officially Fitbit markets their smartwatches (Versa series – specifically) to be able to last for 96 hours and more. When your Fitbit device has aged it is not uncommon for it to die quickly. Many users have reported battery life taking hits after 1-2 years of usage.

In that instance, it is always recommendable to plug the Fitbit into a wall socket (refrain from the USB ports on Computers – there are limitations to it). Make sure your tracker is accurately in connection and the switch is on. Besides you can also replace the battery of your Fitbit device if the issue persists and it feels like time for it.

If the issue would be of drained battery then this would fix it.

If not, well, there is more to come…

Change The Watch Faces

Often the watch faces we set on our Fitbit trackers ends up causing problems.

In practice, it might seem like a stretch, but there have been many reported cases where the watch face couldn’t remain compatible with the Display Screen (quite oddly) and thus made it turn pitch black. By the way if you are not sure what is the icon for watch face we have done the post on Fitbit symbols for you to understand.

Change Watch Faces

SO, if you are someone who is at the moment going through the trauma of looking at your Fitbit Versa 2 black screen I would recommend you get up and fetch your smartphone. There would be a Fitbit application installed in it (supposedly) so all you need to do is change the watch face back to default.

Surely, it won’t be as appealing as the one you had set, but if it’s fixing the issue it’s not a bad deal.

Is it?

Adjust The Brightness

Okay, this right here is for special circumstances, and those special circumstances depend on your surety of the issue. If you are at 100% surety level that screen is dead then it might not be the one for you. However, if not, and your gut is whispering into your ears there might be hope, then try to find a dark room.

No, you won’t have to perform necromancy on your Fitbit Versa 2 there.

Adjust Brightness

What you need to do is find a place dark enough that in happenstance the reason for your problem is a dim display and not a dead display, you would be able to tell it apart and have the brightness adjusted to see it – at least.

Check For Sleep Mode

Fitbit Versa series is blessed with functionalities. So it is not a wonder, you have the availability of Sleep Mode on it. For sure, it is not able to mimic the lab results as of yet. You don’t need to do that, Fitbit has set the threshold high and it does speak quality.

Although, in rare cases, Sleep Mode can be intrusive!

Sleep Mode

What we mean is that it could lead to a let’s say non-responsive state or black screen. Since it is turned on by default. You should get your phone and have it turned off manually by the Fitbit application. If the reason for your damsel in distress was Sleep Mode you would have a bright shiny looking display screen up and running in no time.

Clean It Hard

Despite the popular habit of not cleaning up your smart devices, it is a good practice to do some manual labor and with the help of lady luck enjoy the fruits of it. Quite often what has resulted in malfunction is due to improper care of a device.

Let’s be honest for a second: Anything that gets taken care of thrives. So why should gadgets be treated any differently? Yes, there is a good chance it might not work out, and you would’ve to pursue another route to fix the Fitbit Versa 3 screen problem, I’d always recommend doing a thorough cleaning and hoping for the best.

And don’t be ignorant about it.

Clean It

If you are gonna do it, do it properly by using soft cotton and alcohol. Although a note, never pour the alcohol on the device, have some mixed with a cotton surface, and then rub it off. Failing to do so can cause another set of problems that we certainly don’t want.

  • Put special emphasis on Display Screen.
  • Remove the band to rub the buttons and side piece.
  • Switch off Fitbit and then try to reach out to different paths.
  • Work your way up to the charging spot, making sure everything is okay and moving there.

Once done put the Fitbit to charge and turns it on.

Hopefully, you’ll receive happy news.

Inspect For Water Lock On Fitbit Versa 3 & 4

Just like Sleep Mode, there is also another feature that can be a culprit to your problems, and it is called Water Lock. Fitbit Versa 3 and Fitbit Versa 4 are both equipped with the functionality to recognize whether a user is swimming or is near a large body of water.

Either way, if your issue has arisen after there has been substantial exposure of Fitbit to water then there is a possibility Water Mode has something to do with it.

“So what should I do?”

Inspect Water Lock

The answer is simple: Try to turn off the Water Lock. When Fitbit is under the Water Lock your access to smartwatch controls and touch can be limited. However, you do have the option to have it forcefully turned off.

Double-press the side button quickly. If that doesn’t turn on the watch, press and hold the side button.

Remove The Case From The Fitbit

It is rare but sometimes the case we have used to wrap and protect the watch can interfere with its screen. In that case, it is advisable to have it removed from your Fitbit Versa tracker. If the problem would persist you can put it back on.

Remove Protector

If not, you would know it was the protective case limiting the Versa light sensors to light up the display. Because it can and it has happened with many users. Ambient light sensors are meticulous production, a minor disturbance can lead to a complete blackout.

Hard Reset The Fitbit

Even if all the above-mentioned methods have failed you, there are still a few more guns left to trifle with, starting with the big decision of resetting the Fitbit. Before you think I have gone mad, I haven’t, and yes I do understand the implications of resetting and the upsetting changes it brings forward.

We have to think of the future!

Reset Fitbit

Either way, Fitbit backs up data on their cloud server, so your progress won’t be lost – hopefully. If that is what concerns you.

“Okay fine, but how can I do it?”

What an excellent question. Well, according to the official Fitbit guides the process is quite easy to follow and implement.

  • On the watch, hold all three buttons for about twelve seconds. This triggers the 2-button hardware reboot after about eight seconds.
  • When the Fitbit logo appears, then disappears, release the bottom right button, then continue holding the left and top right buttons until you feel a strong vibration. This indicates the factory reset was initiated.
  • This process may take several seconds, and eventually, the Fitbit logo appears and the device boots and displays go to Fitbit.com/setup.
  • If you fail to release the bottom right button in time or otherwise don’t follow the procedure precisely, the Fitbit logo reappears quickly and boots without a factory reset.

Ask For Third-Party Vendor Aid

I would never suggest anyone do it in the first instance, I haven’t forgotten my horrible experience. But sometimes some people know people who know what they are doing. In other words, if you happen to be friends with a smartwatch repair shop owner or any worker there whom you can trust. I don’t think it would be a fool’s mistake to visit at least.

Ask Third Party Vendor

Don’t spend money. But have them look at it. Who knows what might happen?

Contact Customer Support

Okay, you might be wondering why I suggested reaching out to a third-party source before contacting Fitbit. Well, truth be told, their Customer Service isn’t always reliable. They would answer you. They might even fix your problem, but it won’t be quick.

And if you are someone who can’t wait, then it won’t be a pleasant experience for you.

Go For Customer Service

However, I am also a strong believer in having an open mind, and therefore if your Fitbit Versa is still under the warranty and you think you have a strong claim and you haven’t done anything illegal that might have voided the warranty, then, by all means, call them right now.

I know many people who have gotten the replacement by Fitbit.

And I don’t see any reason why you can’t be that too.

Get A New Screen For Your Fitbit

Yes, I remember what I said in the beginning, but you have to understand sometimes when every door seems to have closed, you should smash the wall and make the way. What I intend to say here is take the risk, and get your Fitbit Versa tracker screen replaced.

And I have my reason to suggest it

  • Not everyone can afford to buy a new smartwatch.
  • Not everyone would have the warranty intact.
  • Not everyone is ready to say goodbye to their favorite device.
  • Not everyone has synced data to the phone so there might be a fear of losing data on the horizon.

Prayers For Your Fitbit Versa Screen To Work Again

In the end, I can only wish the best of luck to you.

I understand how terrifying it is to stare at something you invested money in and have it sitting ducks in front of you. Hence it is my deepest desire that this article takes you to someplace with solace and that your Fitbit Versa screen is up and running in no time.
